Since starting the Hela Bima Rice Project in 2009, Dr. Abey has gone from working with one rice farmer to over 500 and counting!  With many contributions from the United States, he is able to expand the number of farmers joining the Hela Bima Rice Project by educating them on the benefits of farming without the use of harmful agro-chemicals and fertilizers. Dr. Abey holds an “Open University” in the jungle (as seen below), where he educates farmers on the deadly effects agro-chemicals and harmful fertilizers have on your BODY and LIFE…

In Sri Lanka, it is difficult for rice farmers to sell their crops; in fact, they have to take crop loans through loan sharks just to survive and support their families during the off-season.  The farmers grow their crops and sell them at low prices.  As as a result, this causes the farmers to work continuously to pay back these loans.  Due to inflated interest rates, the farmers can never be pay back the loans.

So, in 2009, Dr. Abey founded a co-op where the rice farmers sell their crop, and in return, is sold at a fixed price.  When a rice farmer joins Dr. Abey’s co-op, so many wonderful benefits are provided, such as: education for farmers, schools for their children, and a fixed price market so their product is guaranteed to be sold.

Dr. Abey has also taught lead farmers to educate farmers in other villages and regions on the many benefits of joining his co-op.  This expansion has provided multiple jobs and saved so many lives along the way!

Rice is harvested twice a year and storage is of the greatest importance.  Dr. Abey is currently looking to build a much larger storage facility in a centralized location, as well as enlarge the milling and packing operation to accommodate the growing number of Hela Bima rice farmers in new regions!
