When the storage facility for the rice was first being built, several of the local farmers dedicated their time and effort. Jeewa (photo below), one of the poorest farmers in the village, took his three children to protect the rice in storage. They were so proud that they literally slept by the rice all night!
During ancient times in Sri Lanka, farmers were once of the utmost class, next to the kings. It was not until the 21st century that science and corporations introduced harmful agro-chemicals and fertilizers to these farmers. Over time, young farmers were taught to benefit from agro-chemicals. This has allowed them to grow their crops at a quicker rate, but as a result, their lives have become a tragedy, killing thousands of innocent people.
In 2009, Dr. Abey started his mission, the Hela Bima Rice Project, introducing their ancestors’ 2,000 year-old ancient method of growing rice, without the use of harmful agro-chemicals and fertilizers. He spent years speaking to farmers and educating them on the deadly effects harmful agro chemicals have on your body and life. At first, farmers were skeptical of these methods, but since starting the Hela Bima Rice Project, Dr. Abey has gone from working with one rice farmer to over 500 and counting!
Dr. Abey has educated an entire rice team, who were uneducated before, but are now fully capable to prepare all aspects of milling, packaging, shipping, customs paperwork and distribution. He has trained a supervisor, manager and teachers as well!
Our rice farmers and their families live off of as little as $600.00…a YEAR! 100% of every dollar made from the Hela Bima Rice Project is given directly back to these amazing farmers and their families. This creates value for their lives, financial stability, schools for their children, and jobs!
