On June 10, 2009, in an ancient and sacred area of Sri Lanka, Dr. Abey began construction of a school for the children of the Weera Gamanu rice farmers (Dr. Abey’s co-op). In the early morning before construction started, government officers told Dr. Abey that he did not have permission to build this school.Dr. Abey took one of the government officers and showed him a 75-year-old man who could neither read or write. Dr. Abey said, “I WILL NOT wait until these children are 75-years-old for you to build a school.” He told the officers that as politicians and government employees, providing education for children is their most important duty, which they have not done. Dr. Abey convinced the officers of his mission, received their support and construction began. The school was built in 45 days!
One of the many benefits to the rice farmers joining Dr. Abey’s co-op, is that their children have the opportunity to attend school. Every year, Dr. Abey gives the rice farmers new school uniforms, pencils and notebooks to give to their children. In many cases, children do not attend school because parents are too embarrassed that they cannot even afford a small notebook! Nothing is more rewarding than seeing these precious children so EXCITED and GRATEFUL to experience school – a school that values their future.
